What is a urinary tract infection?

Your urinary system consists of your urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys. If any part of this system becomes infected, then you have a UTI. However, more often than not, the infection will occur in the lower part of this system: The bladder or urethra. These two areas are parts of the urinary system that takes urine from your bladder and out of your body.

A UTI occurs when bacteria enter your urinary system through the urethra. Usually, the bacteria begin to multiply in the bladder, causing the infection. While our body is pretty good at keeping this bacterium out of our urinary system, occasionally this same bacterium can slip by and cause an infection.

Unlike other infections, a UTI is far more common in women. First, there is less distance between a female urethra and the anus as well as the distance between the urethral opening and a woman’s bladder. There are a variety of causes for a UTI. Postmenopausal women have been shown to be very susceptible. Most of the time the bacteria that cause a UTI are found in the gastroenterological tract.

What are the symptoms of a UTI?

Unfortunately, not all UTI’s produce symptoms. These mild infections will run their course and you might not even notice it. However, when you do have symptoms they can include:

  • Cloudy urine
  • Stronger than usual need to urinate.
  • Burning feeling when urinating.
  • When you do urinate, it is in small amounts and very frequently.
  • Strong smelling urine.
  • If there is blood in your urine, it may look pink or reddish.

If a urinary tract infection has reached your kidneys, you may experience these symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Shaking or Chills
  • Upper Back Pain

How do you diagnose a UTI?

Walk in AFC Urgent Care Clinic near Feather Sound. We have an onsite state of the art lab available seven days a week to diagnose your urinary tract infection. When you come to our walk-in clinic, you will give our staff a urine sample. We will conduct a urinalysis to look for signs of a UTI. These signs can include the pH of your urine; its appearance, as well as byproducts of bacteria and white blood cells. We may suggest processing a urine culture to determine the exact bacteria that is causing your infection. By figuring out the exact bacteria, we can better prescribe antibiotics that will more effectively kill it and end your infection.

How do you treat a urinary tract infection?

Since a UTI is the result of a bacterial infection, they can be effectively treated with antibiotics. We carry the necessary antibiotics onsite or can send a prescription to your preferred pharmacy. Most of the time, a general antibiotic should be enough to kill off the bacteria. However, if you do not show signs of improvement, a urine culture will be needed to help us pick a stronger antibiotic to knock out the infection.
